Imaginative Neighbourhoods - Beaumont Leys
Our writer in residence during 2016 - May 2017 in Beaumont Leys was Jayne Williams.
Jayne created lots of exciting activities and got to know the community really well through creative workshops they worked on together. She collected stories about the local people living in Beaumont Leys which were re told through print, monologue and pop up pieces of live performance.
Some of the stories Jayne captured were recorded for a Massive Memoir, as part of the Everybody's Reading Festival in October. Artist Bob Moulder designed 8 exciting new book covers that are now the audio books, enabling you to listen to all of the stories by plugging in some headphones. You can also listen to some of the stories here.
In March, Jayne held the Beaumont Leys Big Celebration, a coming together of the local community. Past and present residents participated and got involved in the event either by providing free food, performing as part of the performance programme or by supporting their family, friends and neighbours as an audience member. During the event there were performances in Spoken Word, Dance and Theatre, Poetry as well as Visual Arts Exhibitions.
Jayne has now finished her residency and artist Owen Craven-Griffiths will be in post at Beaumont Leys for the next year. Owen is a poet, theatre maker and animator, follow his facebook page to find out what activities and events he is planning.
