The Spark Festival takes place in Leicester every May. It is the largest independent children's arts festival in England and Wales, presenting the very best theatre, dance, music, visual arts and digital media events for young people aged 0 - 13 years. Founded in 2003, it has grown over the years driven by the belief that the arts are crucial to a child's development and well-being.
The festival aims for variety and access - to create as many opportunities as possible for children to engage with a wide range of performances and events in a variety of settings:
- Professional theatres- through our 'In Your Theatre' programme
- Schools- through our 'At Your School' programme
- Community venues, parks, libraries, and on occasion a swimming pool! - through our 'On Your Doorstep' programme.
The Spark works closely with all presenting venues, and with local authorities to programme and present events.
The programme aims to present a variety of work, from puppetry to contemporary dance, that is specially created for children by a range of regional, national and international companies. Last year we presented 131 events to an audience of 11,300 people.
The Spark is one of Arts Council England's National Portfolio Organisations. We also receive funding from Leicester City Council.
