What Makes Me, Me?

A poetry residency exploring identity.

Children, aged 8 - 9, from two schools in Leicester created their own pieces of writing in response to the question – what makes me, me?

They showcased their new creative material at an exciting poetry jam at The Spark Festival 2022. These poems were collected and published in a printed anthology.

To help them in their journey to the performance acclaimed Poet John Berkavitch ran a 10-week programme of interactive poetry workshops starting in October 2021.

The workshops ignited imaginations and encouraged children to gain new skills and confidence. They found ways to express their emotions and have their voice heard through the collaboration with Owen.

Throughout this project the children were also challenged to develop poetry clubs within their schools, identifying poetry champions to continue the legacy and love for creative writing.
