Young People's Music Club 2016
with Adriano Adewale
In 2016 The Spark and Leicester-shire Music Education Hub selected three Leicester City schools to join our Young People's Music Club residency. The Schools were: Charnwood Primary, Rushey Mead Primary and Eyres Monsell Primary.
Following on from the success of the Jazz Club with Arun Ghosh in 2015, we were delighted to work with Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. He worked with a total of 85 students across the three schools and introduced them to worldwide music. Together they learnt about Samba instruments and rhythms, and created a composition that was performed as a special performance with Adriano's band in the 2Funky Music Café in Leicester. The two performances were for classes from their school and for families. Through the project each child also had the opportunity to do the Arts Award to help them reflect on the experience and add to their sense of achievement. As a result 55 children achieved their Discover Arts Award.
Adriano is a Brazilian percussionist who delighted school audiences in 2015 with his performance Catapluf's Musical Journey. We chose to work with Adriano as an inspirational musician and have once again seen for ourselves how well he works with children and young people. He is of African origin with a mix of races represented in his quartet. He is a composer and a percussionist which is a highly accessible musical form – suitable for reaching children with little or no experience of music and also for delivery by non-specialist teachers. His music is jazz based with the opportunity to introduce the concept of improvisation and composition.
