Alexis Maxwell

Alexis Maxwell is a multi-disciplinary storyteller, exploring the world through work that is conversational, poetic and experimental. Their practice embraces the whimsical, drawing from fiction and fantasy to create immersive imagery. Self-taught animator and long-time fan of all things spoken word, they reach across disciplines to discover ways of retelling community stories and lived experiences, with a keen interest in autoethnographic explorations of oral histories.

A firm believer that stories can be told in any medium, they use a blend of sound, projection and performance to merge the digital and physical realms. Loudly and proudly working class, they navigate the art sector with a tongue in cheek use of its overblown terminology and a healthy dose of imposter syndrome; not shying away from crudely drawn imagery, purposely distorted audio and cheap alternatives to modern technology.

I’m so excited to be part of Vital Spark! The team’s expertise and passion for creating incredible projects for young audiences will provide me with the tools and inspiration to take my work to new heights. I can’t wait to learn and broaden my understanding of how arts
organisations like The Spark create inclusive and
accessible experiences for children from diverse
backgrounds. It’s a fantastic opportunity to grow
my practice and spark the imagination.

The Vital Spark behind everything we do

We believe that all children should be able to experience arts and culture, and that they should be able to see themselves represented in these experiences. This is not yet the case for every child and we’re committed to changing that.

Our response is Vital Spark, and it's at the heart of everything we do. Vital Spark is about challenging and changing the lack of diversity in children’s arts and culture; it’s about diverse-led artistic decision making; it’s about not being afraid to stand up for what’s right.

We do this by supporting artists who are currently underrepresented in children’s arts and culture. We also work with partner organisations to create world-class opportunities for these artists and share best practice.
