Artist profile
Tatenda Chitsamba
Tatenda is a digital artist, music producer, and storyteller based in the Midlands. His work brings together African percussion, digital sound, and contemporary music to explore rhythm, voice, and storytelling.
He has worked with organisations such as The Spark Arts for Children, New Art Exchange, City Arts Nottingham, and Inspire Youth Arts. His recent projects include Music Hut, a creative space that supports children and families to explore music through play and sound-making.
Tatenda often works with young people in early years and community settings, creating inclusive environments where music becomes a way to connect, imagine, and share stories. His practice is shaped by his Zimbabwean roots and his belief that music can build understanding, connection, and joy across communities.
”I’m excited to be part of Vital Spark because it gives me time and space to reflect, grow, and try new ideas. My work is centred around rhythm and community, and this programme will help me explore how I create for children and families in more focused ways. I’m looking forward to learning from other artists, experimenting with sound and story, and finding new ways to engage audiences. This feels like an important step in developing my practice and shaping the kind of artist I want to become.

The Vital Spark behind everything we do
We believe that all children should be able to experience arts and culture, and that they should be able to see themselves represented in these experiences. This is not yet the case for every child and we’re committed to changing that.
Our response is Vital Spark, and it's at the heart of everything we do. Vital Spark is about challenging and changing the lack of diversity in children’s arts and culture; it’s about diverse-led artistic decision making; it’s about not being afraid to stand up for what’s right.
We do this by supporting artists who are currently underrepresented in children’s arts and culture. We also work with partner organisations to create world-class opportunities for these artists and share best practice.
